Dear friends who enjoyed Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, his first guest star, Gayle Hunnicutt, who played Irene Adler in the series first episode, “A Scandal in Bohemia” has died at 80 years old. Her Adler was superb.

from granada's "a scandal in bohemia"

god, this is one of my favorite scenes in granada, a scene which only exists in the show.

in the canon, we follow watson on his merry way down the street post smoke bomb, so we miss all of holmes/adler's interaction past that point. in my opinion, this recreation of the absent scene captures the essence of the original story beautifully.

through holmes' affectations, he maintains his facade as an elderly clergyman very well. but in the last five seconds of the clip, with his pause, nod, and piercing eyes, holmes removes the mask. and irene's plans are guided onto another path.

although a "non-canonical" addition, which were highly controversial in the production's earlier years, i can see why jeremy and michael cox felt comfortable putting it in the episode (an episode which as the "pilot" carried a lot of risk).
